How to Cook Spaghetti Squash

How to Cook Spaghetti Squash

This oh-so-yummy squash is more than your just average side dish veggie! The cooked squash flesh shreds into threads like spaghetti— hence the name. The strands make the perfect alternative to pasta, potatoes, or rice and can be served with any sauce.

Spaghetti squash is available year-round, but the peak season is in the fall. Like any winter squash, it can be hard and cutting it raw can take some muscle and a sharp knife.

Prepare in the Oven:

Cut the squash in half lengthwise and place, cut side down, in a baking dish. Add enough water to com about 1/2-inch up the sides of the dish and cover with aluminum foil. Bake at 375°F for 45 minutes, until the squash is easily pierced with a knife. Turn the squash over and cover with foil again and cook for another 15 minutes, until it is very tender. Remove from the over, uncover and let it cool slightly. Using a spoon, remove the seeds and discard. Using a fork, gently pull the strands of squash away from the peel.

Prepare in the Slow Cooker:

Pierce the spaghetti squash all over with a fork. Place the whole squash into a slow cooker with 2 cups of water. Secure the lid and cook on low for 8-9 hours. Once done, remove the squash from the slow cooker and let cool. When it is cool, cut the squash in half and scoop out the seeds. Using a fork, pull the strands away from the shell. (It should come out easily.)

Besides it’s delicious versatility, spaghetti squash is packed with beta-carotene, a powerful antioxidant. It can prevent the oxidation of cholesterol in the body and help regulate blood-sugar levels. The potassium in the squash helps lower blood pressure and it has tons of fiber! They come in different shapes, so look for a squash that is firm and heavy for its size. Soft spots and green color are signs that the squash isn’t ripe.

Chia Seeds: Everything You Need to Know

Chia Seeds: Everything You Need to Know

A sacred food of ancient cultures, chia seeds are a Fat Flush staple and have some real health appeal!

They are extremely nutritionally dense, gluten free, and abundant in antioxidants, vitamin C, minerals, fiber, essential fatty acids, and protein. In fact, they are considered the world’s most fiber-rich food. So, get off the ‘bran’ wagon! They are also the highest natural source of omega-3s. (Sorry, salmon!)

Chia seeds are easily digested without the extra step of grinding, unlike flaxseeds that need to be ground to get the full nutritional benefits. Chia seeds also have neutral flavor that works well with the taste of other foods. Sprinkle them in casseroles, salads, veggies, yogurt, or smoothies! Keep chia seeds in a cool, dry area.

Let’s talk numbers…

Consider that just 1 ounce of chia seeds yields…
– 4.9 grams of omega-3s, more than 100 percent of the daily dose recommended by the American Heart Association
– 10.6 grams of soluble fiber, more than one-third of the USDA recommended daily amount
– 177 mg of calcium compared to 56 mg contained in a single stalk of broccoli
– 4.4 grams of protein versus 0.01 grams found in a 1 ounce portion of kidney beans

Roasted Garlic

Roasted Garlic

Add a unique depth to any side dish, soup, salad, or meat and poultry! Give your home-cooked meal the flavor and flair of a fancy restaurant with roasted garlic.

Here’s how:

  • Start with as many garlic heads as you want.
  • Cut off the heads, but leave the cloves in their skins.
  • Wrap them in foil and place in the oven (preheated to 350°F) for about 45 minutes.
  • You’ll know they’re ready to come out when they’re slightly brown and soft all the way through (poke them with a fork to find out).
Get the Flax Straight: Why Flaxseeds Are Important to Your Diet

Get the Flax Straight: Why Flaxseeds Are Important to Your Diet

Hands down, one of the most effective ways to promote better health, feel good, and look even better is by adding omega-3-rich flax to your meals: flaxseeds, flaxmeal, or flaxseed oil. Besides having an extremely high omega-3 content, flaxseed is also rich in dietary fiber and lignans.

Health Benefits

– The soluble fiber aids in reducing carbohydrate absorption, stabilizing blood sugar levels, inhibiting cholesterol absorption, and lowering blood cholesterol.
– The insoluble fiber absorbs water in the digestive tract to ease elimination, making it a great help with bowel problems such as constipation and diverticular disease.
– Lignans- which are concentrated 800 times more in whole flaxseed than in other plants- are recognized for their antiviral properties and helping to alleviate perimenopause and menopause symptoms.

Quick Tips

  • Use flaxseed whole or grind to the consistency of finely ground coffee. Although ground flaxseed can be stored for a short time in the refrigerator, you will get the most nutritional benefit by grinding the seeds as needed.
  • Store whole flaxseed at room temperature up to a year. Store ground flaxseed in your refrigerator for up to ninety days.
  • When you’re using whole flaxseeds in baked goods, soak them for 10 minutes before adding them to the batter.

Easy Uses

  • Delicious and nutritiously healthy, flaxseed tea helps cleanse toxins from the kidneys and combat intestinal irritations or mucous membrane irritations. Simply steep 1 teaspoon of flaxseeds in 10 ounces of boiling water for 20 minutes. Strain and enjoy with your breakfast, lunch, or dinner.
  • Blend 1 tablespoon of flax oil into yogurt and stir in some fruit.
  • Drizzle flax oil over veggies and season to taste.

Day 13: Nikole’s Shakedown Journal

Hey there, fellow —and future— fat flushers! My name is Nikole and I’m going to be taking you along on my fat flushing adventure! I hope that my journals help you to become as passionate as I am about this life changing plan. And for those wondering, it doesn’t just help you lose weight. Yes, that’s an amazing benefit! But your overall health is the important thing here! There is a Fat Flush Plan for everyone! Let me start by introducing myself.

I’m married to the love of my life, have 3 pretty princesses who keep me on my tippy-toes and 2 spoiled pups. I’m a daughter, sister, and friend. I volunteer at my daughters’ school and work as a hair stylist. I love making women feel beautiful! I love the outdoors, working hard and I hope to inspire others with my story. What you see is what you get! I’m an everyday person, running kids around, trying to keep a clean house and juggling a million things at once! So far on my journey, I have lost over 50 lbs and I am the healthiest I have ever been with the Fat Flush way of life. So yes, YOU CAN do it too! Being busy is an excuse I used for many years. As Thomas Jefferson said, “Don’t put off until tomorrow what you can do today.” Take that first step to becoming the new and improved you, and feel the best you have ever felt!

The most common questions I get are, “How did you do it?”, “What do you eat?”,  “How do you do it being a wife and a mom?” and “What do you do when you go out of town or out to eat?” These are questions that I am going to be answering as I take you through my day to day life! So, let’s go! (And remember, anything I’ve underlined is a link; click it for more info!)

Day 13 ♥ Shakedown Journal

So today I talked to a few friends who’ve been shakin’ and I’m so excited! Everyone’s feeling better and are so happy with how fast they are seeing results! The best part, everyone says, is the fact that they aren’t hungry and that’s what I love. My body is getting everything it needs nutritionally and it allows me to focus on everything else that’s going on in life instead of what my next meal is going to be.

I remember the days where I would be done with one meal and after I was done I was already planning my next meal and what restaurant I was going to eat at and the dessert I was going to have. I seriously didn’t realize how much I focused on food and how much it took away from my life.

The shakedown was my introduction to the Fat Flush way of life and I thank God every day that I found this amazing program. I can’t even imagine what direction my life would be going in if I didn’t “clean” up my act! Best part has been that it is so easy! They do all the thinking for you! All you have to do is follow the guide. I also encourage everyone to read the Fat Flush Plan or Fat Flush for Life. Those books are life changing!
